About the Concert Bands

Concert Band Blue & Concert Band Gold

Syllabus

Welcome!

As a Rosemount High School Band member, you are expected to:

PRACTICE  on a regular basis

• Participate in LESSONS on a regular basis

• Prepare your band music to the best of your ability.  You are expected to have all your “notes    learned” outside of daily class/rehearsals.  Daily class rehearsals are for MAKING MUSIC     and putting it all together as an ensemble NOT for “learning your notes.”

• Work together with everyone in the group to make the entire Band experience fun, challenging    and focused on realizing YOUR MUSICAL POTENTIAL and making music at a high level!

BAND LIST SERVE

If you or your parents are not already signed-up for the RHS Band List Serve - we encourage you to do so!  This is a great way to be informed of RHS Band "news" via our electronic newsletter automatically e-mailed to you when you simply sign-up at:

http://www.district196.org/rhs/listservices/

BAND LIBRARIAN

We are in need of students to serve as BAND LIBRARIANS to sort & organize band music. You must have a STUDY HALL, and you would be assigned to the Bandroom for your STUDY HALL.  There will be time to complete homework and even practice, in addition to your Band Librarian duties, during your STUDY HALL.  This may also qualify for "community/school service" hours in other areas (NHS?).  75 Band Letter points per Trimester (up to 225 total possible points per year!).  If interested - see Band Directors.

JAZZ BANDS

All of the Jazz Bands at RHS meet outside of the school day.  The Jazz Band season is December - March.  In addition to one concert at RHS by all Jazz Bands, all jazz bands participate in a Jazz Festival.  We especially need BASS GUITAR, ELECTRIC GUITAR & PIANO players (you must be able to read music & chord notation).

There are 4 Jazz Bands at RHS (there is a place to participate for anyone interested in Jazz!):

Jazz 1 - by audition only.  Jazz auditions occur in late October.  Auditions consist of jazz music excerpts & sight reading.  Jazz 1 meets on Monday’s & Thursday’s, 2:30 - 4 PM.  Jazz 1 participates in ON STAGE (involves additional rehearsals).

Jazz 2 - NO AUDITION necessary, meets every Monday 2:30 - 4 PM & Thursday 4 - 5:30 PM

Jazz Blue - NO AUDITION necessary, meets every Tuesday 2:30 - 4 PM

Jazz Gold - NO AUDITION necessary, meets every Wednesday 2:30 - 4 PM

SMART MUSIC

This interactive, computer-based practice system helps students get better faster, and makes practicing more fun. With amazing accompaniments for more than 30,000 titles, challenging exercises, JAZZ IMPROVISATION, SOLO ACCOMPANIMENTS, a built-in TUNER & METRONOME and the ability to record personal CDs, SmartMusic is the future of music learning at home.  With SmartMusic loaded on a computer, students plug in a instrumental microphone and begin practicing. They play their part with accompaniment and receive, in real time on the computer, detailed feedback on their performance.  A year-long subscription is $30.  The RHS Band Directors HIGHLY RECOMMEND SmartMusic as an excellent and very helpful learning tool!  For more information, and to order SmartMusic, visit their website:  www.smartmusic.com

BAND "VARSITY LETTER"

All band members have the opportunity to earn a varsity letter in the RHS Band program. This award is for recognizing additional service and musical achievement, both in furthering the band organization and their own personal growth, through their participation in band co-curricular activities, (co-curricular: band activities that take place outside of the curricular school day, but relate to the daily band class/curricular experiences). The points can be earned primarily in these co-curricular band activities:  Marching Band, Solo & Ensemble Contest and Pep Band.

Points can be earned in a variety of other co-curricular band activities, as listed below. These points accumulate in one year (June to May) and cannot be accumulated beyond one year.  Students must be enrolled in band for the entire year (all three trimesters) to qualify for a Band Varsity Letter.

Varsity Letter - 425 band co-curricular points, and at least 60 points of your total accumulation must be earned in the Pep Band category.

"Honor" Varsity Letter - This award certificate recognizes any RHS Band student who has exceeded the expectations and requirements for a Varsity Letter Award in Band, and has accumulated at least 525 co-curricular band points in one year (points accumulate in one year only, and at least 60 points of your total accumulation must be earned in the Pep Band category).
