the only program of its kind associated with one
of the great symphony orchestras of the world.
Here, under the guidance of distinguished
professionals and in the presence of the Boston
Symphony Orchestra, young people devote
themselves each summer to an artistic experience
without parallel. For any student of high school
age who enjoys being challenged by the highest
standards, BUTI represents a unique opportunity;
Tanglewood is a magical blend of the formal and
informal, of joy and hard work. No one who
spends a summer at Tanglewood leaves untouched
by the experience.
•The spectacular panoramic landscapes viewed
from the Tanglewood Institute's Campus provide
an inspirational setting for the practice and
study of music. Rehearsals, classes, and
coachings occur throughout the campus in a
variety of natural settings. The beauty of the
Institute's setting also includes Tanglewood
facilities, the summer home of the Boston
Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the

Tanglewood Music Center's library, with
listening facilities and thousands of albums and
scores.
•It is impossible to list all the talented,
dedicated, and charismatic people with whom
Tanglewood Institute students come in contact
with each summer, it would be an impressive and
international list of “who’s who” in the world
of classical music. However, students who
participated in the Tanglewood Institute and are
now distinguished alumni and legendary names in
the music world include: Leonard Bernstein
(composer, conductor, soloist), Seiji Ozawa
(conductor), Wynton Marsalis (trumpet artist),
Michael Daugherty (composer), Burt Bacharach
(pianist & pop music composer), John Adams
(composer), Eiji Oue (former Minnesota Orchestra
conductor) and many others! Since 1936,
Tanglewood has provided an extraordinary
opportunity for students and “serious music
lovers” to immerse themselves in the world of
classical music at the highest artistic levels
possible while surrounded by the natural beauty
of the Berkshires.
