RHS MARCHING BAND  -  AUGUST UPDATE
**IMPORTANT INFORMATION  -  PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY & CAREFULLY!

FORMAL GROUP PICTURE & FRESHMEN ORIENTATION   Monday, August 16   **3:30 PM
**Report in full uniform for formal group picture – STADIUM (if NOT raining) or MAIN
GYM BLEACHERS (if it is raining) – no Shako's
1.) Do not wear any jewelry or make-up
2.) Uniform inspections will occur at 3:30 PM (make certain that your uniform fits properly – especially the pants!  See website for information/pictures regarding properly fitting uniform: http://www.rosemountband.com/mbuniform.shtml
3.)  Rehearse (in MAIN GYM) for Freshmen Orientation Performance immediately after pictures
4.) 6:00 PM - We will perform for the Freshmen Orientation, in the main GYM, in uniform (no Shako’s).  Music to be performed:  Opener, Ballad, Midway March & RHS School Song
5.) Immediately following the performance, Freshmen Band members will change clothes (bring a change of clothes and your Band Uniform garment bag & hanger) and then go with their parents and attend the Freshmen Orientation activities for the remainder of the evening.
6.) Everyone else will go home (done by 6:30 PM) - take care to hang-up your uniform properly at home!

METRODOME OPPORTUNITY   Thursday, August 19   6 PM – 1 AM
*The Metrodome has installed new turf.  To promote the new turf, they are offering FREE use of the facility to the RHS Marching Band
*This is a tremendous opportunity for the RHS Marching Band to refine their show performance in a dome stadium with a high vantage point, learn about DOME ACOUSTICS, operate in a positive/controlled weather environment, and this is great preparation for BOA St. Louis!
*Round-trip bus transportation provided to Metrodome for all Students & Parent Chaperones
*All students must wear a WHITE SHIRT
*BRING:  water bottle, dot-book, instrument/performance equipment, bag lunch/snack (to eat on bus ride to dome)
*Due to Metrodome insurance restrictions, no parents/visitors are allowed in the Metrodome during this practice.  However, RHS Parent Chaperones for this event will be given full access to the dome.
***WE NEED 8-12 PARENT CHAPERONES FOR THIS EVENT, report at 6 PM, done at 1 AM (ride the buses & help load/unload equipment).  If you are interested & available to chaperone this event, please e-mail:   steve.olsen@district196.org  (bring your video camera!)

8/19 METRODOME SCHEDULE:
*6 PM – Report to RHS, warm-up & practice
*7 PM – Load Trailer, RHS parking lot
***We need PARENT HELP to load trailer***
*8 PM – Buses & Trailer depart for Metrodome
*9 PM – 12 Midnight, practice in Metrodome
*1:00 AM – Arrive back to RHS

ADVERTISING FUNDRAISER  *Band Ad Book Fundraiser – ends August 18
*All Ad’s will appear in the printed program booklet given to each audience member at the Rosemount Marching Band Festival, September 11.
*Students earn 50% profit (credited to each student’s band fundraiser accounts) for all ads sold
*AUGUST 18 – FINAL DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING ALL AD’S
*Ad's can be e-mailed to:   steve.olsen@district196.org
*Don't forget those cute PICTURE GALLERY ad's ($30 - includes a picture and one-line text message)

MINNESOTA STATE FAIR  Thursday, August 26
Marching Band Parade Performance
*9:00 AM - Report to RHS, warm-up & rehearse at RHS
*9:45 AM - load buses & depart.
*BRING:  Instrument / performance equipment, spending-money for food & snacks and an optional change of clothes (for before and/or after the parade).
*DO NOT BRING:  jewelry, purse, excessive amounts of money, CD players, I-Pods, etc. or any valuables that you cannot leave on the bus or do not want to carry with you all day
*PERFORMANCE UNIFORM:  Show T-Shirt, Khaki shorts, white socks & athletic shoes.   No sunglasses or hats may be worn during our parade performance.
*10:30 AM - Arrive at fairgrounds, enjoy the fair (free-time)!  All band members receive free admittance to the state fair and a discount meal coupon for select food vendors at the fair.
*1:00 PM - All Band members meet to warm-up for parade, meet at the same place where the buses dropped us off (Gate 25 Parking Lot off of Como Ave.).  Eat a healthy lunch prior to this time and drink plenty of non-caffeinated beverages in the morning.  Wait to eat all of the greasy junk food on-a-stick until after the parade!
*2 PM - Parade begins.  The parade route is 13 blocks long and travels through the most populated areas of the fairgrounds.  Fair officials expect a crowd of 60,000+ people to be on hand for the parade! There are 3 other bands performing in the parade and numerous floats.  All bands are judged in the area near the Space Tower (close to the beginning of the parade route).
*Immediately following the conclusion of the parade, drink water, load equipment on buses, change clothes (if you brought clothes to change into).
*Parents, family and friends are welcome and encouraged to come & watch the parade! 
*3 PM  Enjoy the fair (free-time)!
*6 PM - Meet at the bus loading area, depart for RHS at 6 PM
*6:30 PM - Arrive back to RHS, unload equipment; phones are available for students to use.

**Please stop by the Bandroom and CONFIRM and/or SIGN-UP to help at the 21st Annual ROSEMOUNT MARCHING BAND FESTIVAL & SILENT AUCTION
**MANY PARENT VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED FOR THIS EVENT!
**SIGN-UP LISTS WILL BE POSTED IN THE BANDROOM AREA DURING THE ENTIRE OPEN HOUSE EVENING

RHS FIRST HOME FOOTBALL GAME – Thursday, September 2
*RHS "rish Stadium
*5:45 PM - Report in full uniform, Bandroom (eat supper before you arrive!) & bring a water bottle!
*6 PM - Hornline Warm Up's begin in PAC
*6:20 PM - Form Parade Block & march to Stadium
*6:35 PM - PreGame Performance, on track in stadium
*7:00 PM - Game begins, RHS Band performs show at half-time.  Marching Band ALWAYS STAYS FOR THE ENTIRE GAME, we sit together in instrument sections in the stands.  Play RHS school song after every RHS touchdown score.
*We do not eat food or drink pop while in uniform in the bleachers
*9:30 PM - Done!  Uniforms are kept at home.  Students are responsible for taking good care of the uniform (always hang the uniform correctly on a hangar, and not sealed in the garment bag - let it breathe & release any "smelly" odors!).

*Show begins at 1 PM
*11:30 AM – Concessions Stand Opens, Stadium Gates open, SILENT AUCTION bidding begins
*12:30 PM - RHS Marching Band members report, eat lunch at the RHS Stadium

EASTVIEW MARCHING BAND COMPETITION
Saturday, September 11

Show begins at 5 PM
*RHS Marching Band students will eat supper at the RHS Stadium Concessions Stand (student expense) or bring a bag lunch.
*RHS Marching Band performs last at Eastview, and will practice in the RHS Stadium after the RHS Festival concludes (prior to departing to Eastview)

HORNLINE MUSIC TESTS 
*Occur each rehearsal day 5-6 PM
*Everyone is expected to successfully pass a music memorization test on the Show Music, Star Spangled Banner, Midway March, RHS School Song & Scales (scales do not have to be memorized).
*All music testing must be completed BEFORE school begins!
*August 31 is the LAST DAY FOR MUSIC TESTING!
*Read through your Marching Band Handbook Information, there are helpful tips for music memorization.  Please feel free to contact your Section Leader, Squad Leader or Band Directors for help with your music!

MARCHING BAND GRADES - TRIMESTER 1

GRADING ELEMENT     /     PERCENTAGE OF T-1 GRADE

MUSIC MEMORIZATION TESTS  -   50%
Hornline:  Pass music memorization tests (BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS) on entire show
music, Scales, SSB & School Song
Percussion:  Pass music memorization tests on all show music, as evaluated by
Percussion Instructors
Color Guard:  Pass equipment work evaluations as administered by Color Guard Instructors

PERFORMANCES  -   20%
Trimester One - 14 total Required Performances:   Two parades, Freshman Orientation,
Four home football Games, Seven Marching Band Competitions/Festivals

DOT BOOKS   -   10%
Complete & accurate DOT BOOK

LESSONS   -   20%
Two lessons are required during Trimester One,  for ALL Marching Band members.
These lessons will occur during the second half of the Trimester (after the October BOA weekend).  Each lesson is assessed/graded based on the quality of performance in that lesson (which is based on preparation  - "practice" is the homework for band lessons).

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL RHS MARCHING BAND MEMBERS!!!
Congratulations and THANKS to all Marching Band members for your outstanding work on your marching band show thus far!  You and your show are very impressive!  REMEMBER: RHS Marching Band is a FRONT-LOADED investment, in that all the work and time you have put into it during the summer will pay off later in the Fall when the GLORY & FUN OF PERFORMING brings rewards for your hard work and efforts!  You are the proud owners of an awesome Marching Band show!!! Your investment of SWEAT EQUITY involving hard work, time, cooperation and dedication to excellence is allowing our Marching Band to realize incredible potential!  Keep it up and help each other continue to be successful as an entire Marching Band by:
* Attending all practices
* Complete the Music Memorization Testing (Hornline members) by August 31
* Carpool to & from rehearsals and performances (Vet's be sure to ask who needs a ride!)
* Always bring your complete DOT BOOK (and other necessary materials/equipment) to all rehearsals
* Stay positive & don't be afraid to ask for help with anything! (Seniors, Section Leaders, Squad Leaders & Staff - it's their job to be helpful and help each member be successful!)
* Continue to practice regularly & carefully on your own at home, striving to realize your potential as a performer!
* Be proud of who you are and what you are accomplishing & achieving – because it is very impressive!
