Marching Band Uniform Information

UNIFORM PARTS
1.) Jacket
2.) Pants
3.) Two white arm Gauntlets (Drum Line does not need Gauntlets)
4.) Sequin pyramid-piece that attaches on the front of uniform
5.) Shako & Plume (plume inside cardboard tube) in black/plastic “Shako Box”
6.) White Gloves
7.) MTX Black Marching Shoes
8.) Black socks (you supply)
9.) RHS Band Garment Bag with YOUR NAME CARD clearly showing
10.) V-NECK WHITE T-SHIRT (you supply)

GENERAL UNIFORM INFORMATION
1.) YOU MUST wear athletic shorts or boxer shorts and a V-NECK WHITE T-SHIRT underneath the uniform. This protects the uniforms from perspiration damage (this will be obvious on a white uniform).
2.) Students must wear clean black cotton athletic socks, (you supply these!).
3.) If you lose your Marching Band gloves, a replacement pair can purchased through the school, $2 for new gloves, one-size-fits-all.
4.) All uniforms once fitted and assigned, will be kept at home. You are responsible for keeping your uniform properly stored on the hanger.
5.) Please remember that these uniforms are NEW and cost approximately $400.00 each. Please take good care of them!
6.) Shoes, socks, jacket collar-liner and gloves must be cleaned before every performance.
7.) Each student is responsible for the care and safekeeping of their assigned Marching Band uniform. ANY DAMAGE OR LOSS OF A UNIFORM, OR ANY OF ITS PARTS, IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT. This means paying for the repair or replacement of any damaged/stained or missing uniform, and any or all of its parts.
8.) At the conclusion of the Marching band season, each student will be given a DRY CLEAN VOUCHER to get their uniform professionally dry cleaned (at no expense to you). When you turn in your uniform at the end of the season, we expect that it WILL BE IN THE SAME EXCELLENT/NEW CONDITION AS WHEN YOU RECEIVED IT.

PROPERLY FITTED UNIFORM - CHECK-POINTS - see pictures below...

PANTS:
1.) Pants are “high-waisted” by design and the top edge of the pants should fit above the navel!
2.) The most important correct-fitting part of the pants must be the PANTS LENGTH (inseam).
The front crease of the entire length of the pants must be perfectly straight (unbroken by any crease or wrinkle) when standing at attention with your marching shoes on. The bottom edge of the hemmed pant (front edge of pants) must touch (but not hang over) the top of the shoe in front, and hang to the middle of the shoe-heel in back. Be certain that you have adjusted the suspenders for a proper “pants length” fit. If this does not work you may need to alter the hem-line of the pants.
3.) UNIFORM ALTERATION: If your uniform needs to be altered in the jacket sleeves or pant-length, it is OK to alter the hem. However, DO NOT CUT OFF EXCESS FABRIC/MATERIAL! The next student using that uniform may need that length. Also please do not use iron tape for hemming as this is very difficult to remove. A simple hem tack will do.
4.) The waist size of the pants is easily adjustable. Adjust the side zippers on the pants for a comfortable fit around the waist, and adjust the suspenders for a proper “pants length” fit. Be sure to consider that you will deep-breathe and will be doing much physical moving/marching in these pants (caution that they are not too tight!!!). If you have made all possible adjustments to the waist-size of the pants and they still do not fit correctly/comfortably, you need to get a different pair of pants.

JACKET:
1.) The jacket should be easy to get on & off and feel comfortable when wearing. Always have someone assist you in getting into your jacket - the BUDDY SYSTEM!
2.) Button the neck-collar hook and be sure that this is not too tight a fit around the neck
3.) Check the jacket fit with arms/hands placed in instrument playing position. Does the uniform get too tight across the back, or is it comfortable?
SHAKO (HAT):
1.) All hair must be worn above the collar and behind the ear. Bobby pins, hair nets, etc. can be used to hold your hair up and inside of the Shako. Be sure to consider this when selecting the correct Shako size.
2.) A properly fitted SHAKO consists of:
• Two fingers space between the bridge of your nose and the hat-bill
• Comfortable fit to your head (not too tight, but not so loose that the Shako may fall)
• You can adjust the string inside of the Shako for a tighter or looser fit (if the string is missing, find some string & replace this - a shoelace works great!)
3.) Shako’s are not needed for FRONTLINE members
4.) NEVER ever wear your Shako backwards!
CARE OF THE UNIFORM
1.) Do not wash or “hand wash” the jacket or trousers portion of the uniform in any manner. Professional dry clean only.
What can (and should be) washed in any residential washing machine after each use, are the following uniform parts:
1.) Jacket collar liner (snaps out of collar)
2.) White gloves
3.) Black socks
2.) After each wearing of your uniform, hang it up properly on the hangar. Remove the uniform from the garment bag as soon as possible after use, let it air out! Any moisture trapped in the bag will cause mildew which is extremely difficult and expensive to remove (in addition to being very stinky!)
The worst enemy of Band uniform fabric is perspiration - always wear a WHITE V-NECK T-SHIRT under your jacket. Second only to this is dirt that can be embedded into the material and do permanent damage.
3.) Check your jacket frequently that it is clean & white. A clean stiff brush usually will remove any dirt/dust that collects on the jacket (or pants). NEVER SET YOUR JACKET ON THE GROUND!
4.) SHOES MUST NEVER BE PLACED INSIDE YOUR GARMENT BAG!!! This can cause damage to your uniform! Use the backside shoe storage zipper compartment on your garment bag.
5.) Using a permanent marker, write your name on the bottom inside & outside of your shoes. You are responsible for keeping your shoes clean and at home! USE THE “SHOE POLISHER” INCLUDED WITH YOUR NEW SHOES!
6.) Plumes will be kept in your Shako box in the cardboard tube. Note that the plume can be permanently damaged if not placed in tube correctly (one-way direction in & out of tube).

APPEARANCE WHILE IN UNIFORM
1.) Hair must be worn above the collar and behind the ear.
2.) All jewelry must removed when in uniform. No earrings, necklaces, etc. Plan ahead to leave these valuables at home.
3.) Uniform pants must be the same uniform length throughout the Band, the bottom front edge of your pants hem should barely touch the top portion of your shoes. The crease on the front of your pants must be perfectly straight and unbroken, when standing at attention! Judges at competitions will notice this and it will affect the competitive score of the entire band in the Marching & Maneuvering caption of a marching band competition.

4.) Wearing cosmetics, “make-up” while in uniform is not recommended (Exception: Color Guard, you may wear makeup!). Invisible base make-up clogs pores and does not allow the skin to breathe properly, leading to potential overheating and exhaustion. Make-up also will stain the uniform collar.
6.) The way we dress and take care of our appearance says a lot about the way we feel about ourselves as a group. Pride in our appearance will generate pride in our actions and thoughts. Uniformity of dress and sharp/crisp appearing uniforms is adjudicated at all marching band competitions.
7.) With proper care and maintenance, these uniforms will last a long time. Do your part. Always wear the uniform with pride. If you remove any part of the uniform, remove all of it. If you are wearing any part of the uniform, wear it all. Be proud of your BAND and SCHOOL, and show it every time you put your uniform on!

UNIFORM FITTING - PARENT VOLUNTEER INFORMATION:

Rosemount HS Band – Uniform Fitting Information
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE UNIFORM FITTING

Number of Volunteers and Time Involved
• It would be helpful to have at least six volunteers. If all of this is done in one day, it will probably take all day.
• Suggest they may want to bring their lunch.

Materials Needed
• Four tables
• Clothes racks
• Pencils/Pens/Markers/Highlighters
• White blank mailing labels
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Beaded ponytail bands (to secure shako box handle)
• “Cut” index cards (to put name in slot of garment bag and shako)
• Uniform “care” sheets
• Large empty boxes for wire hangers
• 3M hooks for putting on the walls in the uniform room for ease of hanging up uniforms the students are trying on

When the uniforms come back from the dry cleaners, the pants and the jackets will be on separate hangers and the gauntlets will be in a bag/box. The pants and jackets will then be hung in the uniform closets. You will find the triangles and jacket collars arranged numerically in the top left uniform closet.

Order of Operation
• Make sure that all the wooden hangers are in the closet. Some hangers may be missing because of being lost or broken the year before. If a new hanger is needed, write the number on the hanger with a thick black marker or white label.

• All the pants and jackets need to be pulled from the closets and put on separate clothes racks in the hallway. They then need to be arranged on those separate racks according to the pants or jacket number. The wooden hangers should also be taken out of the closets and hung right behind the pants with the same number.

• It would be helpful to work in teams of 4 for this stage, each having a table to use. Have the first person put the pants on the wooden hanger with the same number. Then, have that person hand the pants on the hanger to the second person who can put on the corresponding jacket. That person would then hand it over to a third person for them to snap on the corresponding triangle. The fourth person would snap the collar in the jacket, making sure the jacket number and collar numbers matches, and hang the uniform numerically back on the rack.

**If there are not enough racks, lay the jackets tables and first put the pants in numerical order on the racks. Pull all the wooden hangers from the closets and put them in numerical order on the rack next to the corresponding pants. Then put all the pants back in the closets numerically. All the jackets then need to be put on the racks numerically and the corresponding triangles and collars snapped on. Then the jackets need to be matched up with the corresponding hanger that already has the pants.**

You will have a lot of wire hangers. I think these can be recycled at the dry cleaners.

Returning Band Members Wanting Same Uniform/Shako as Last Year
Mr. Olsen will have students who want their same uniform/shako as last year sign their names on a sheet.
• Check last year’s uniform roster and pull their uniforms. If they play the bass drum, remove their triangle and put it in the first upper left closet. Note: Some of these students may have a different jacket number than pants number. Make sure the wooden hanger you give them matches the jacket number. The pants can then be hung back in place in the closet using a wire hanger.
• The garment bag needs to be labeled, using a half of an index card, and the uniform placed inside of it.
• Shakos need to be pulled and their names put in the shakos using half an index card. The shako box will need to be labeled using a mailing label and then covered with clear packaging tape. Inside the shako box should be the shako, plume, and gauntlets (if not in percussion), and a uniform care sheet. The shako box needs to be shut and then secured with a beaded ponytail band.
• The uniform and shako numbers need to be recorded on the “new” roster taped to the uniform door.
• The uniform number also needs to have a line drawn through it on the “master list” that is on the desk in the “Will-Call” room. Please use pencils in case changes need to be made.

UNIFORM FITTING DAY SET-UP

Number of Volunteers
• Two drum majors/day
• Five adults/shift
• Suggest they may want to bring their lunch

Supplies Needed - Hallway by “Will-Call" Room:
• two tables and chairs outside the “Will-Call” room
• have different sizes of marching band shoes in hallway for students to try on
• list with students’ names and the times they signed up to come
• order sheet for shoes and gloves
• cash box
• blank mailing labels (to put name on shako box)
• packaging tape (to put over label on shako box)
• beaded ponytail bands (to secure shako box handle)
• “cut” index cards (to put name in slot of garment bag and shako)
• pens/markers/highlighters
• uniform “care” sheets
• have a stack of garment bags and a box of gauntlets on the floor by the table

“Will-Call” Room:
• A list of students (with names and time slots) should be taped on the window facing out.
• Inside the office on the desk have a “master list” that lists all jackets and pants sizes.
• Have several pencils/pens and a couple of rulers.
• Tape a roster of band students with names and uniforms they used last year on the door that leads to the uniform closets.
• Next to that roster, tape a blank roster of the same kind for filling in information on what uniform/shako each student will be taking.
• A list of returning band members who want their same uniform should also be posted on the door.

Note: It would be helpful to have some 3-M hooks on the walls for temporarily hanging up a uniform when fitting a student.

UNIFORM FITTING PRODEDURE

Volunteers:
• Two drum major/parent volunteers can sit at a table outside the “Will-Call” room.
• They will have a copy of the schedule listing when the students signed up to come for a fitting. When a student comes in, cross off their name on the list.
• Have them try on sample marching band shoes to see what size they need to order. Write down the size on an order form and collect their money. Put a “checkmark” if they’ve paid.
• Ask them how many pairs of gloves they want. Collect the money and fill out the order form. Put a “checkmark” if they’ve paid.
• Tell the student they can now go in the “Will-Call” room to be fitted.
• Fill out two half-sized index cards with the band student’s name. One card will be put on their garment bag and one will go inside their shako box.
• Put one card in the slot on the garment bag and put it along the wall.
• Keep the other card at the table to put in their shako.
• Fill out a mailing label with the student’s name
• After they are fitted, they will come back out with their uniform and shako box.
• The second volunteer can show them where their garment bag is and tell them to put their uniform in it. Explain to them the pocket of the garment bag is for their marching band shoes.
• Put the other index card inside their shako.
• Explain to the student how to wear the gauntlets and place them in the shako box.
• There will also be a “uniform care sheet” that should be put in the shako box.
• Put the mailing label, with their name on it, outside of the shako box. Cover the label with clear packaging tape.
• Secure the shako box handle with beaded ponytail bands.

• Have one person sit at the desk inside the “Will-Call” room with the master list of uniforms. This list has all the marching band uniforms broken down by size. This person will be the one who will help you decide what uniform a student should try on, based on the student’s size.
• The rest of the volunteers can help a student with their fitting inside the “Will-Call” room.

General Fitting Information:
• The girls try on their uniforms in the girl’s bathroom and the boys try on their uniforms in the wrestling room (door to this room is located in the back of the uniform room)
• They leave their t-shirt and athletic shorts on when trying on the uniform.
• Explain to them the pants zip in the front, are high-waisted and will seem short. For determining correct length—while wearing their shoes, there needs to be no fabric break in the front crease. The hem can be adjusted by parents.
• Tell them they will need help zipping their jacket. When they have their jacket on, have them pretend they are holding their instrument to see if fits properly.
**Snare and tenor drummers wear a harness under their uniform. Bass drummers wear a harness over their uniform and do not wear the triangle.

Fitting the Uniform:
When a student comes for a fitting, ask if they were in marching band last year. If a student was in band last year but did not sign up to use their previous uniform, encourage them to try it on anyway (if it hasn’t been assigned to someone else). This gives you a good place to start, and a lot of the time the uniform still fits.

• If a student is new to marching band, ask them their height and weight. If they are a boy, ask them if they know their pant waist size and length/jacket size.
• Tell the person at the desk with the “master list” these numbers and he/she will give you a uniform number for the student to try on.
• Pants—Explain to them the pants are zipped in the front and have suspenders. Tell them they are high-waisted and may seem too short.
• Jacket—Explain to them how the jacket is worn. Tell them you will help them zip and fasten it.
• If this size doesn’t fit, ask the person at the desk with the “master list” for another size.
• After fitting a uniform, record the jacket and pant number on the list on the uniform door.
• Tell the person at the desk with the “master list” the number on the jacket and pant, as well.

Fitting the Shako:
• The shakos come in “small, medium, large and x-large.” Most people will fit into either a medium or large.
• Inside the shako box is the shako and plume. (This is also where they will store their gauntlets.)
• Pick a size and have the student try it on. The shakos can be adjusted by the lace inside.
• To determine a proper fit, have the student place two fingers on the bridge of their nose to see that there is no space between brim of hat and fingers.
• Explain to the student the way the plumes are to be taken out/in the cardboard tube they’re kept in.
• Record the shako number on the list on the uniform door.
• The student then goes back out into the hallway for the drum major/volunteer to give them their gauntlets, label their shako and shako box, and garment bag.
