BAND REHEARSAL & PERFORMANCE ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance at ALL scheduled rehearsals and performances is required and is part of your basic membership in Band.

This is a fundamental and integral part of your membership in Band. Performances are a public demonstration of what has been learned in Band, they are considered the “final exams” for the Band class. Music is meant to be heard. Each performer in the ensemble is dependent on each Band member being present to perform their specific and integral part. Because the Band is more than just a collection of individual performers, it is necessary that we rehearse and perform as a unified group.

Problems with individual attendance seriously limits our ability to be consistent and strive for excellence. Every attempt has been made to structure an efficient and effective Band calendar that includes a reasonable number of rehearsals and performances and is respectful of your time and is aligned with realizing our goals of achieving excellence.

If WE are to be successful, YOU must be there. Every member is a “starter.” There are no “benchwarmers” or “alternates” in our Band!

The only EXCUSED ABSENCES from a scheduled rehearsal are:

• You are ill the day of the rehearsal, and if school were in session you would be absent from school. Call the Band Office, 651-423-7541, in advance to report your illness/absence.
• A family emergency occurs. Call the Band Office ASAP, 651-423-7541.
• Regarding summer Band rehearsals only, you are participating in a family vacation or summer camp (EXCEPTIONS: Band Camp & Drill Week). You must notify the Band Directors at least three weeks in advance, in writing.
• Regarding summer Band rehearsals only, you are attending a summer camp (EXCEPTIONS: Band Camp & Drill Week). You must notify the Band Directors at least three weeks in advance, in writing.

The only EXCUSED ABSENCES from a scheduled performance are:

• You are ill the day of the rehearsal/performance, and are absent from school. Please call the Band Office, 651-423-7541, in advance to report your illness/absence.
• A family emergency occurs. Please call the Band Office ASAP, 651-423-7541.
Any other absence from a rehearsal or performance is unexcused. Failure to notify the Band Directors in a timely manner of your absence is also unexcused.
Unexcused absences from rehearsals or performances will:

• Negatively affect the performance goals of the entire Band
• Negatively affect your grade in Band
• Restrict your opportunity to earn a Varsity Letter in Band
• Will result in meeting with you and your parents and with the Band Directors to discuss your continued participation in Band
• May lead to the loss of Band membership

Student jobs/work conflicts, are absolutely no excuse for missing a rehearsal or performance.

Use your RHS Planner to stay organized in managing your schedule & time!

Read and share the Band calendar information with your parents, employer, coaches, etc. and check for possible conflicts. In the event of a schedule conflict, COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY!

Talk to your Band Directors, we support YOU! Every attempt will be made to be fair and understanding in the event of unusual circumstances. However, please remember that we and your peers in Band expect you to honor your commitment to attend all rehearsals and performances as part of your basic band membership! Be organized and manage your calendar well! Make a habit of writing down all of your events/appointments/commitments well in advance and examining this calendar frequently! You live a busy life - manage your time and commitments carefully! Share this information with your parents!

St. Louis, MO, Edward Jones Domed Stadium:

The RHS Marching Band will be performing again this year at the 2011 Bands of America (BOA) St. Louis Super-Regional Marching Band Championships - October 14 & 15th, 2011 (note that this is NOT during MEA weekend as in the past). This will be another very exciting opportunity to perform and see other outstanding bands from several different states in a "big time" stadium experiencing "national level adjudication." Check out the BOA website for more information on these performance opportunities:
