Band Camp
Information
St. John’s
University - Collegeville, MN
Cost
The all-inclusive cost of the
RHS Band Camp is $400. This includes
dormitory housing (two students per room), three
healthy/complete meals each day, use of campus recreational
facilities, instruction for the week, deluxe motorcoach/bus
transportation to and from the camp, Thursday night pizza
party and a RHS Band SHOW T-SHIRT. In addition, students
may want to bring spending money for snacks or St. John’s
souvenir; a suggested maximum amount of money to bring,
$30-50.
Deadlines
Two forms,
Medical Form and the
Parent/Guardian Permission Form, must be
completed and returned prior to our departure for
camp.
Photocopy both
sides of your medical card, and staple this to your
completed Medical form. Students will not be
permitted to attend the camp until both forms are complete
and turned in to the Band Directors.
Transportation
Richfield Bus Lines will
provide round-trip transportation. The deluxe charter-coach
buses are air-conditioned and have VCR’s and restrooms on
them. If you want to bring a video movie, the bus service
requires a G/PG/PG-13 rating only (R rated
movies are not allowed). Our new 42-foot
equipment trailer will be used to carry all large
instruments, percussion and color guard equipment. All
luggage will be transported in the bus cargo bays. Students
are reminded not to bring extra equipment (storage space
is very limited on our buses!) and students should
adhere to the enclosed packing list.
All band students are
expected to ride the buses to and from camp. Any
camper planning to ride to or from camp with parents or
family must have a written note from the parents given to
Mr. Olsen prior to camp departure.

Friday Performance
(last day of camp!)
On Friday, we will celebrate
our camp accomplishments with a demonstration of what we
have learned – a performance of our marching band show (a
work in progress!)! It will be an exciting end to our week
of Band Camp and everyone is invited!
It’s good to “share camp” with your child. The
presentation will begin promptly at 4 PM and will occur in
the St. John’s University Clemens Stadium (see
enclosed campus map). The performance will end at
approximately 5 PM at which time all students will load all
equipment into our buses and depart. Your child is welcome
to ride home with you - please complete the “Student Rides
Home With Parent” Form and give to Mr. Olsen. Students may
only ride home with their parents - otherwise everyone else
is expected to ride the bus back to RHS.
If poor weather is expected,
the performance presentation may be canceled.
* PLEASE NOTE:
•St. John’s University does
not allow dogs/cats on their campus
•Friday afternoon traffic
heading north from the Twin Cities can be heavy and slow –
please plan accordingly and drive safely!

Phone Calls
Campers may make phone calls
from pay phones around the campus and in the dorm lobby or
bring a cell phone.
If you need to phone your
child while we are at camp, a message will be taken and
forwarded to your child (your child will then return
your call at a later time after receiving the message).
Calls to campus can be placed
to 320-363-2240. Please remember, during the day your child
will be with the band anywhere on the campus and may not be
able to return the call right away (unless this
is an emergency).
Mr. Olsen’s cell
phone number is 952-200-3273.
Housing
Housing is in modern college
dormitory style buildings which meet all current standards
for fire and smoke alarm safety. There are two students per
room. All girls will be housed on floors separated from all
of the boys floors. There are bathrooms/showers and a TV
lounge located on each floor. Parent chaperones will be
housed on the same floor as students, two parents per room
(with their own separate bathroom/shower facilities).
Instructional Staff members will be housed in a separate
dorm.
All RHS staff, parents and
students will be housed in the same dormitory complex area.
Room assignments will be
completed during July band practices. This gives students
the opportunity to sign-up to room with whomever they
choose. Those who miss the room sign-up during the July
practices will be assigned to a room.
St. John’s
University provides sheets, blanket and pillow (and pillow
case) for each bed. There is no need to bring
a sleeping bag. In addition, they also provide two
towels for each person to use through the week. You
should bring your own swim towel to use. Also,
the rooms are not air conditioned. You may want to bring a
small personal fan. Large box/window fans are not permitted.
St. John’s University assigns
a housing security monitor-person who lives in our dorm and
maintains an office next to the front doors of our dorm. In
addition, the college has 24 hour security personnel that
patrol the entire campus throughout the day and night. Each
student will be assigned one dorm room key. DO NOT
LOSE YOUR DORM KEY! There is a $100 charge per lost key,
payable by the student. WE SUGGEST THAT YOU BRING A LANIARD
TO ATTACH YOUR KEY TO.
Meals
Campers are provided with
three complete buffet style meals each day. There is a
large variety of food selections at each meal that have
proven to be very popular for this age group. A salad/fresh
fruit bar and soup & sandwich bar is available at every
lunch and supper meal (this is in addition to the variety of
entrees presented in the buffet foods line). Campers are
encouraged to take what they can eat and may return for
extra selections. Campers are also expected to eat what they
take and not waste it. The food is excellent - healthy,
tasty and plentiful!
Campers are not
encouraged to bring their own snacks/"junk"
food as a substitute for eating regular meals.
All students are
required to eat and meet together in the dining
hall during each meal time.
If you have dietary questions
or special dietary needs, please contact Mr. Olsen prior to
camp.
Name Tags
Name tags will be provided to
every camper, parent chaperone and staff member. Name tags
must be worn at all times throughout the week (not in
the showers!). This is a St. John’s University rule and
expectation. Wearing a name tag identifies our group to
their security personnel and food service staff. It
is suggested that you bring a laniard to hold your
name tag, room key, and your ”Dot Book” (small memo
pad).
Medical Needs
No student may attend camp
unless their medical form is current, complete and handed
in.
Students must
report any injuries or illness to parent chaperones and/or
band staff immediately at any time (day or night) during the
Band Camp week.
Parents will be contacted via
collect-call telephone if a camper is ill, has a fever, etc.
If there is a need for medical care, emergency or otherwise,
the student will be taken to the nearest hospital emergency
room and the parents will be notified ASAP by camp staff.
If parents will be away from home during the Band Camp week,
please provide a phone number(s) where we can reach you on
the enclosed Medical Form.
ANY and ALL
medications must be listed on the medical
form; this includes prescription medications and
any over-the-counter medications such as
Tylenol, etc.
Students needing medication
must comply with school district medication policies. ALL
MEDICATIONS, both prescription and non-prescription must be
given to the parent chaperone “camp nurse” upon arriving at
camp (Sunday evening). Only the amount of medication needed
for the week should be sent with each student.
Prescription medications are
required to be in original bottles labeled to show the
student’s name, physician name and current dosage.
Non-prescription medication must also be in an original
bottle with the camper's name on it. Medication cannot be
accepted if it is in unlabeled containers or in plastic bags
(school district policy). HOWEVER - students requiring
inhalers for asthma or Epi-Pens
for allergies (that are necessary for their safety and
well being) should carry these medications with
them at all times (label this with your name),
but must identify those medications on their health
form.
Medications are dispensed at
meal times in the cafeteria (or at other times according
to your medical needs).
Tums and acetaminophen
(Tylenol) may be provided to campers on an "as needed" basis
from camp staff, only if written parental approval
is noted on the student health form. If interested
in this, parents may write a statement such as “I give my
permission for my son/daughter to receive Tums and/or
acetaminophen (Tylenol) when requested” on the medical
form. If students regularly use these kinds of medications,
(Tums and/or Tylenol), they are encouraged to bring
their own. Students should never share medications
with other students.
Parents please
note: If your camper has special needs,
special dietary needs, concerns or medical information that
we should know about, please list it on the enclosed medical
form (this information is confidential). In
addition, please feel free to contact Mr. Olsen prior to
camp with any other concerns or information that you feel
would be helpful for your camper to have a successful week!
Mr. Olsen can be reached at:
E-Mail:
steve.olsen@district196.org
Band Office: (651)423-7541
Cell Phone: 952-200-3273
Camp Music
All of the musicians
attending camp will have already received the music for our
fall show. Bring all of your marching band
music and musical technique/exercise packets with you and a
PENCIL! Make sure you have marked in the
rehearsal instructions from the July rehearsals. Much of the
music is challenging! It will help make your experience at
camp more pleasant and rewarding if you learn and memorize
all of your music prior to attending Band Camp. We have
additional copies of music if you need it - ask us for it
WELL BEFORE WE DEPART FOR CAMP!
RHS Band
“Show” T-Shirts
Each camper receives the
distinctly unique marching band show T-shirt included in the
camp fee. These shirts will be distributed when
you check-in on Sunday (Band Camp departure day). BRING THE
SHIRT TO BAND CAMP for the group picture!
This shirt will also be part of the uniform for the parade
on Saturday.
Percussion Equipment
Loading
Saturday (day
before departure)
All Percussion equipment will
be packed and loaded into the band trailer by all Percussion
members on Saturday, time to be determined by instructors.
This will probably take approximately 90 minutes maximum for
all percussion members. This makes our departure easier and
smoother on Sunday! Any Hornline members and
parents that want to help are welcome and encouraged to join
us!!!
Loading and Departing

pair of shoes, in addition to the athletic shoes
that you normally wear for marching band practice
√ Your SWIM TOWEL and
WASHCLOTHS; You are provided two towels for the week from
St. John’s, you may want to bring extra towels if you wish;
and a plastic bag for packing wet items on the last day.
√ Dress for the week is
comfortable and very casual(shorts &
t-shirts are perfect!). You may want to include a pair
of long pants & a long sleeve shirt (for dealing w/

and a small alarm clock - packed inside
your suitcase. Coordinate this with your roommate.

of hat) to protect your head and face from sun
exposure.
12.) Bring
Sunglasses!

Rules and Regulations
Challenge yourself to a total
effort for POSITIVE RESULTS - your own as well as those of
other people. Help others, be considerate, take time to get
to know every Marching Band member, encourage each other,
and be sincerely positive!
SMOKING, USE
AND/OR POSSESSION OF ALCOHOL, TOBACCO OR ANY MOOD
ALTERING CHEMICALS, DRUGS, OR WEAPONS, IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN
AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!
Any student
possessing, and/or using, any
alcohol/drug/chemical/tobacco substance, or weapon, at any
time during the camp, will be sent home immediately,
and reported to school authorities, Rosemount Police and the
Minnesota State High School League.
Consequences for violation of
the following rules is handled based on the seriousness of
the violation, the past record of the student and the
attitude of the student. However, it should be
understood by both students and parents that any serious
violation of any rules governing this camp may result in a
student's discontinuing the camp at any point during our
week. This includes violation of
curfew times! If any such event would occur,
the parent/guardian would be notified by collect telephone
call (day or night), and the student becomes the
responsibility of the parent/guardian, and that
responsibility includes the UNCHAPERONED return trip
transportation costs and any other expenses to send the
student home immediately.
All campers are expected to
attend ALL rehearsals, meals and camp activities throughout
the week. In addition, campers are expected to be on time
(be responsible for yourself - wear a watch, know the
schedule).
If at anytime campers have a
problem or any concern, they need to talk to an adult and/or
the Camp Director – Mr. Olsen. A complaint or spreading
rumors doesn’t help or improve anything. If you are aware of
a fellow camper who is having difficulties (not feeling
well, homesick, lonely, habitual tardiness, etc.)
please contact an adult or Mr. Olsen ASAP.
The rules are designed for
each person’s success and safety. Please follow them and be
respectful so that everyone will have a great time together.
CAMP RULES / EXPECTATIONS
The following
list of RULES does not intend to be inclusive, but rather
serves to cover important situations that may arise:
1.) Promptness is of the
utmost necessity. All students are to be on time and
participate in assigned rehearsals, meals and activities. It
is selfish to make an entire group wait for you.
REPORTING 5 MINUTES EARLY IS ON TIME!
2.) When a curfew/lights out
is set, each camper is expected to be in his/her assigned
dorm room, and to remain there until breakfast.
After curfew, YOU MAY NOT LEAVE YOUR ROOM! If this
becomes a problem, we will call your parents, and you could
be sent home at your expense, and possibly suspended from
our first uniformed performance. This is for your safety,
security and rest.
3.) The entire
women’s dorm floor is for females only, no males
are allowed at anytime (this includes the lounges,
hallway and all rooms on the women’s floor).
4.) The entire men’s
dorm floor is for males only, no females are
allowed at anytime (this includes the lounges, hallway
and all rooms on the men’s floor).
5.) Items that can be used as
a weapon, including pocket/camping knives of any size, are
not permitted at camp.
6.) You are not to use any
behavior or participate in any activities which might
endanger your safety or the safety of another individual.
7.) No
swearing/cursing/profanity.
8.) Do not be involved in
anyone else’s choice to break these rules.
9.) We are guests of St.
John’s University - treat your hosts well; we depend on
them. Campers are responsible for any damage to St. John’s
University property.
10.) The rights, feelings,
and property of others, including that of our camp hosts,
are to be respected. Do not borrow something, even to use
briefly, without owner’s specific permission - and then take
full responsibility for its safety and return.
11.) Plan your rest time so
you are on time for all activities. Be aware that it takes
extra time when many people need to use the same bathroom
facilities.
12.) Campers are expected to
get adequate sleep so that you are able to participate in
all camp activities. Six days at a camp expends a lot of
energy, be smart and get your rest!
13.) Campers need to eat a
proper diet and will be expected to take part in all meals.
14.) Campers are to wear
their name tag at all times.
15.) Campers are responsible
to keep the dorm areas clean, inside and outside the
building, as well as the other camp facilities, buses,
practice fields, etc. PICK-UP YOUR OWN TRASH!
16.) Dorm room inspections
may be held in the morning, while you are participating in
the marching basics. Rewards & recognition will be
presented to clean rooms and “work detail” will be assigned
to excessively dirty rooms. Dorm Room decorations while at
camp must be appropriate and not offensive
to other campers, adult chaperones and the college hosts.
Inappropriate decorations include: alcohol advertisements,
semi-nude & nude pictures, displays of inappropriate
words/profanity, etc. Adult chaperones have the discretion
to confiscate any inappropriate items displayed in your dorm
room. Bottom line: Don’t bring questionable or potentially
inappropriate items of this nature to Band Camp!
17.) Rooms should be left as
clean on departure at weeks end as they were upon arrival.
18.) Electrical equipment
such as stereos, TV’s, video games, or speakers may not be
brought to camp. If they are - they may be confiscated until
the end of camp.
19.) Items such as I-Pods,
personal video games, etc. are not the responsibility of the
camp or camp staff and should be carefully considered if you
are intending to bring this to camp (they are easily lost or
stolen).
20.) The adult staff and
parent chaperones are responsible for you, so they are in
charge. All and any directions or suggestions given by
chaperones are to be followed.
21.) If you ever feel ill,
inform one of the adults immediately!
22.) Drink lots of water -
carry your water bottle with you everywhere you
go. You can fill your water bottle with ice &
water during meal times while in the cafeteria. Parent
Chaperones will provide large water containers to refill
your water bottle at all main rehearsal locations. You will
be out in the sun and doing lots of physical activity. AVOID
CARBONATED BEVERAGES (soda pop). Don't
load-up on caffeine, you need to rest and
sleep at night (caffeine WILL dehydrate you and not
allow you to relax and rest, causing you to get sick).
23.) Wear adequate
SUNSCREEN(remember to reapply throughout the
day) and alwayswear a hat while outside,
(however, no hats may be worn in the
dining hall - campus rule).
24.) Our campus is a safe
environment and there are St. John’s University security
personnel on duty throughout the campus 24/7. However, it
is always a good idea to never travel alone, always travel
in small groups.
25.) Water balloons & water
canons/pistols may be used OUTSIDE ONLY, during your free
time ONLY, and ONLY with WILLING PARTICIPANTS! Also -
remember to pick up water balloon pieces and discard them in
the appropriate trash container afterwards!
Be responsible for
taking good care of yourself and others by making good
decisions to be safe and healthy!
Our definition of
Integrity: making good decisions and doing what is right
when no one is watching you. Be a person of good
integrity! |
